I made the dress out of white linen, and I got to make something that I really loved. There is actually a gown in the new line that has some similarities to it. Hopefully more of the bigger brands that don’t have shareholders to answer to will continue to lead the way in how the fashion industry can address its serious environmental and ethical problems. Lisa Yes, we think being size inclusive is related to sustainability. As women, our bodies go through so many changes in our lifetime. We hope that HDH can be a brand present for those changes for our customers. And that they can use our circular apparel project, The Sustain Shop, when they outgrow or move on from a piece. I chatted with the designer and Hackwith director of operations, Erin Husted, about their newly-minted studio space, the stories behind the brand and its Makers Alongside series, and what’s next for the ambitious designer. My first big project without a pattern was my own wedding dress. I couldn’t find a dress that really felt like me, so I decided to make my own. I’d only been sewing for a few months, so it was a big undertaking, but luckily, my client was very forgiving.

But I also change 2-3 times a day because when I make a sample piece, I wear it for an hour or two to make sure it functions and drapes well and is comfortable and easy to wear.

Each item is designed and produced in St. Paul, Minnesota by Lisa and her small team of seamstresses. It’s a really affordable way to start that is a little less intimidating.
